Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Falls Short on Late Goal to Gators

COSTA MESA – After a dangerous corner kick in the 85th minute, Emily Gehrlein-Allen found the back of the net to give San Francisco State a 1-0 women's soccer victory at VU Soccer Field on Saturday.

Gehrlein-Allen's second game winner of the year helped the Gators improve to 3-3, while the Lions dropped to 1-3 in their final non-conference match of the season.

Vanguard played without two starters on the backline, but produced a quality defensive effort to force the Gators to make adjustments throughout the match.

SF State outshot VU 7-6, with both sides finding four shots on frame.

What Happened?: Both teams came out aggressive to start the contest, but it was VU who found the more direct chances in the first half. Alyssa Fong's strike in the 17th minute was nearly enough to open the scoring, but Cameryn Nunn's quick hand to the top corner prevented the early breakthrough.

Senior keeper Jordin Holmquist-Wilder was called into action on the other end for VU just minutes later. She smothered a close-range Gator effort and held on to Samantha Shim's 20 yard strike in the 23rd minute.

Rachel Penick provided another test for Nunn to close out the half, but her right-footed rifle to the bottom left corner was palmed away with a firm right hand. It was Nunn's second straight game with four first half saves.

The game slowed down in the second half but it was the Gators who played on the front foot, outshooting VU 3-1, and not surrendering a single shot on target.

The game-winning goal came with SF State's final shot of the game. Lauren François funneled a fast-paced outswinger into the box. Holmquist-Wilder's punch for the ball ricocheted off a Gator head and fell kindly for Gehrlein-Allen, who slotted the ball into an open net.

What's Next?: The Lions will kickoff their first ever PacWest campaign against Fresno Pacific on September 26 at 7:30 p.m.
