SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Vanguard and Cal State San Bernardino battled to a scoreless draw on Thursday at Premier Field as the Lions outshot the Coyotes 13-11 in their season opener.
The Coyotes (1-0-2) entered the game ranked No. 12 in the country in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Twenty players saw action for the Lions, with Aidan Hay, Ben Sieber and Adan Alvarado making their first career starts. Also making their first VU appearances were Niko Ochoa, Shaun Im and Henry Garcia.
Junior Connor McCoy led the Blue and Gold with three shots, including one on frame.
Midway through the first half, McCoy and Alvarado produced dangerous chances. The Lions, who won the corner kicks battle 11-8, generated some opportunities in the second half as well with DJ Kiernan, Tyler Miramontes and Garcia in the mix. Nine of VU's 11 corners occurred in the second stanza.
Hay made two saves to secure his first shutout in a Lion uniform. His counterpart, Aiden Hanes stopped four shots by Vanguard.
Cal State San Bernardino was whistled for seven yellow cards, compared to just two for VU.
What Was Said?: "We played a great 90 minutes," said Head Coach Jesus Miramontes. "We made it difficult for them and defended very well. They were a great team and we managed to create a few big time chances. I'm super happy with our performance against a top 20 team on the road."
What's Next?: VU plays its home opener on Saturday against Cal State San Marcos with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
