HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Vanguard beach volleyball team defeated Life Pacific before dropping a close battle to Hope International at the Brookhurst and PCH Courts on Saturday.
The Lions are now 6-9 on the season and 5-3 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Warriors fell to 1-8 and 0-6 in conference play, while the Royals to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in league action.
VU's twos and fours went 2-0 on the day.

The Lions won at every spot on the ladder. Emily Hon and Logan Daniels started with a win at the fives, 21-10, 21-10 over Havanna Pennington and Mya Castro.
At the fours, Bailey Coffin and Kortney Hitt were 21-14, 21-13 victors over Lindsey Johnson and Peyton Ertle.
The Lions clinched the match at the threes where Paige Cutwright and Gianna Pecile outlasted Mackenzie Stewart and Kate Murray in three sets. After dropping the first set 21-19, Cutwright and Pecile bounced back to win 21-15 and 15-9.
Madi Nash and Madison Arnold then stormed to a 21-9, 21-14 victory over Audrianna Guzman and Jadyn Armstrong at the twos.
The Blue and Gold wrapped up the win at the ones – Emma Galloway and Hannah Wilmes the second pair to overcame a first set deficit – knocking off Hannah Caddow and Iliana Galindo by scores of 15-21, 21-18, 15-11.

Phoeby Sebby and Savannah Sulte put the Royals on top with a 21-12, 21-15 victory at the fives over Hon and Daniels.
The Lions responded with a three-set victory at the fours as Coffin and Hitt won their second straight match. The duo took a 21-14, 17-21, 15-9 triumph over Cassidy Koffroth and Mora Sanchez.
The Royals returned the favor at the threes with a three-set win of their own. Overcoming a first set loss, Addie Mathias and Rachel Street upended Cutwright and Pecile with a 22-24, 21-14, 15-9 victory as HIU went up 2-1.
Nash and Arnold tied the score at 2-2 with a 21-12, 21-11 rout of Emma Pearson and Stephanie Perez for the tandem's second win of the afternoon.
But the Royals sprung an upset at the ones, as Candice Palmer and Rachel Miller defeated Galloway and Wilmes, 21-19, 21-17.
What's Next?: The Lions face a big challenge next Friday as they travel to Santa Clarita to take on No. 1 OUAZ and No. 3 Arizona Christian and noon and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
