IRVINE, Calif. -- Vanguard beach volleyball attempted to take down the Concordia Irvine Golden Eagles on Saturday, but the Blue and Gold only claimed one total set across the five pairings. CUI swept both of its matches on the team's senior day to go to 16-7 overall, while VU falls to 6-13.
Emily Hon and
Emma Galloway were pitted against Kali Uhl and Kelissa Lemoine at the ones and CUI won 21-11 and 21-8 to claim the win.
Madi Nash and
Madison Arnold were the only VU duo to nick a set off the Golden Eagles in their tussle with Sara Ostojic and Tatum Smith in the second flight. CUI took set one 21-14 but Nash & Arnold responded with a 21-16 decision in the second to force a third. The two pairs duked it out in evenly in the third, but late in the final set, CUI pulled away, as Ostojic & Smith took the match with a 15-13 win.
Paige Cutwright and
Gianna Pecile took on Korah Nordin and True McCullough in the battle of the third pairings and CUI emerged with a 21-15, 21-19 sweep.
Bailey Coffin and
Logan Daniels forced Ashleigh Souza and Keila Giusta to extra rallies in the opening set, but the Golden Eagles won the frame 22-20 before taking set two 21-10 to take the fourth pairing.
Reece Fisher and
Ana Broadhead also pushed CUI in the opening set but Nicole Miller and Makena Houston prevailed 23-21, with the Golden Eagles taking the second period 21-9.
Ily Attinger and
Mariah Rua also played but lost to Olivia Highstreet and Alex Omaszta 21-11 and 21-5 in an exhibition match.
What's Next? The Lions will take on #10 Saint Katherine and CSU Bakersfield to finish the regular season on Friday morning at 9am and 11am in Carlsbad.
