SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Vanguard men's wrestling took on a new opponent tonight in Minnesota State University Moorhead on the campus of San Francisco State. But despite some inspired efforts, the result favored the Dragons 37-5. MSUM won all but one weight class, though a couple of Lions were close to victories, only to be spoiled by the clock running out.
VU was open at 125 pounds and
Robert Villegas faced Thomas Carrillo at 133 pounds. The two were equal for most of the contest, but Carrillo eked out an 8-7 decision.
Fernando Barreto Jr. grabbed the only dual points for the Lions on the night at 141 pounds, as he dragged Pedro Velazquez around the mat for a 21-5 technical fall victory.
Malikhi Espiritu engaged Cody Wienen in a hot contest, as each wrestler hit double digits over three periods. However, Wienen had just enough to sneak away with a 16-14 win. Jacob Reinardy then pinned
Caidence Turner at 157 pounds before
Sunni Motas faced Jacob Thomas at 165 pounds. Motas grabbed two points but could not find a takedown in the third period, as Thomas won 4-2.
Anthony Sykora beat
Marquize Brown 15-5 at 147 pounds and Mason Gode pinned
Keagen Kroeger at 184 pounds.
Isaiah Hernandez tried to hold Wyatt Powell down at 197 pounds but Powell produced a late point to win 5-4. Liam Babitt then defeated
Roman Torres at the heavyweight class.
What was Said? "We need to wrestle with more belief and expect to win. We lost too many one-score matches. But these are fixable issues. Looking forward to a good week of training," said Head Coach
Caleb Flores.
What's Next? The Lions will compete at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas on December 21.
