Lions Split the Points with Silverswords

COSTA MESA -- Vanguard's three-game win streak was stalled with a 1-1 draw against Chaminade. The Monday morning matchup saw VU concede first for only the third time this season to put the home side down 1-0 at the half. However, a quickfire response through Zachary Miramontes put the Lions level and the senior's fourth career goal would conclude all scoring for the contest.

Despite dropping points, the Lions (6-3-2, 4-2-1) remain in third in the Pacific West Conference, while the Silverswords shifted to 1-5-3 overall and 1-2-3 in conference play.

The Blue and Gold fired a conference-high 21 shots in the match but found just three on target. Adan Alvarado had a career-high five shots, with four coming in the second period. Austin Tubbs was active in the box with four shots and nearly grabbed the winner in the 90th minute. Niko Ochoa and Sidney Dina each tallied three shots, with Dina's best chance coming in the first half.

VU found critical chances on set pieces, as CUH had 15 fouls to VU's three. The Blue and Gold led on corner kicks 8-1.

What Happened? The first meeting between both programs started with a rush of Vanguard attacks. Alvardo swept his freekick under the Chaminade wall to force a save from Jonah Valmonte. The CUH keeper was summoned again a minute later, as Dina made an angle cutting in from the left which required a bottom-right save. The VU front line remained a handful, as sharp passing gave space to Ochoa, whose effort was wide right in the 12th minute.

The Silverswords survived the Vanguard wave of pressure and opened the scoring in the 20th minute, after a cross on the ground was buried by CUH's Owen Malone for his third goal of the campaign. VU continued to enjoy healthy spells of the ball, but despite the 63% possession stat being in their favor, the squad saw their best chances come from set pieces. Slater's Hammer's header in the 26th-minute corner flashed far right and Tubbs's diving header to close the half could not find the net.

The Lions found the equalizer in the 51st minute after a Cooper Clark delivery caused panic in the CUH box as the Silverswords could not clear the ball past Miramontes. Amid the frenzy, the senior showed finesse, cushioning the ball with his chest and lacing a left-footed strike to level the score.

The moment sparked a Lion charge, as the Blue and Gold outshot CUH 15-2 for the second half. However, it would be the last shot on target in the match for VU and subsequently the last goal. A Lion's counterattack with 19 seconds left to play gave Tubbs a decent opening to find the winner, but the bouncing ball could not be tethered toward goal.

What's Next? Vanguard will kick off their final road trip of the year as they head to La Mirada to face Biola on Saturday, October 26 at 4 pm.
