Box Score POMONA, Calif. -- A 13-7 shot advantage for Vanguard men's soccer was unfortunately not enough to get the Lions a win on Wednesday against Pomona-Pitzer. On the flip side, VU was able to hold the Sagehens to six total shots, none of which were on target, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
Stewart Alvayero paced all players with three total shots and tied
Nathaniel Gomez and
Austin Tubbs with two shots on frame. The Lions now hold a 2-0-4 record and the Sagehens an 0-2-1 mark on the season.
What Happened? It took 36 seconds for
Markus Garcia to set the tone with a blistering shot on goal but the Sagehen goalie, Ethan Bae, was able to make a diving stop to his right. PPC then seized control of the action for a short spell, firing off a couple of shots and a corner kick, but
Edwin Monterrosa did not have to make a stop as the defense kept everything tidy for the Lions. The 10th minute saw the winds change and the Blue and Gold almost take the lead. A shot by
Donald Kiernan thumped off the crossbar, denying VU the lead. Garcia then had another shot miss wide in the 17th minute, with a shot from Alvayero in the 18th minute being saved, as Bae continued to keep it 0-0. That would end the good chances for the rest of the half, as both sides tried to open the door offensively, but neither could not unlock the respective defenses. The Lions had a 6-5 edge in shots in the first half and each squad had two corner kicks.
Vanguard resumed the attack in the second half and launched seven shots to PPC's one, with the defense and midfield looking sharp and controlling their parts of the field. VU had two corner kicks in the first six minutes of the period but no chances developed. Shortly after, a shot by
Slater Hammer went high and another good effort from Tubbs was saved by Bae. The offensive pressure continued to flow from the Vanguard end towards the Sagehen goal, but despite the best efforts of the Blue and Gold, nothing would hit the twine. Gomez had the best attempt in the final minutes of the game, as his attempt in the 79th minute sent Bae diving again, but the PPC goalie stopped the ball once more.
Sidney Dina nor
Cooper Clark could get their shots to hit the frame and the full-time whistle brought the game to a 0-0 conclusion.
VU had a 7-2 lead in corner kicks for the match. Bae stopped all seven shots on goal that the Lions launched his way, while Monterrosa did not have to make a single stop. This is the first tie between the two programs, with VU winning the previous three encounters.
What was Said? "We continue to play well defensively and generate some quality chances," said Head Coach Jesus Miramontes. "We can't seem to find the back of the net. If we can get this offense on the same page as the defense, this team will be very dangerous. This was our third game in six days and we played well enough to win. We still have to improve though, if we want to have a chance at a three-peat."
What is Next? Another NCAA foe is next, as the Redlands Bulldogs come to the VU Soccer Field on Saturday, September 16, at 4:00 p.m.
