WALNUT, Calif. – The highlight of a busy day of Vanguard track and field on Friday centered on Jordyn Burke breaking her own school record in the 400 meter hurdles at the Mt. SAC Relays.
The sophomore lowered her personal-best from 61.99 to 61.78 as she competed in a loaded field with NCAA Division I athletes. She ranks third in the NAIA with that performance.
Jessina Morales and India Moors participated in the women's 5000 meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Morales finished with a time of 18:14.49 and Moors followed in 19:45.95.
A large continent of Lions looked to better their marks and times down the street from the VU campus at the Orange Coast College Last Chance Open.
Dorothy Jackson and Olivia Finch broke into the VU all-time top 10 list in the women's 400 hurdles. Jackson clocked 1:10.13 for seventh all-time, while Finch was just a shade behind her in 1:10.84. Finch entered her time as the eighth-fastest in VU history.
Winners of various events included Elizabeth Betten in the 200 meter dash (26.04) and 400 meter dash (58.97). The latter effort propelled her into the 10th spot in the VU record book.
Karla Sanchez-Ruiz captured gold in the 800 meter run (2:26.02), while Faith Hunt finished first in the triple jump with a top leap of 10.36m.
The men featured some great performances as well with Evan Hernandez coming in first place in the 3000 meter run, finishing with a time of 8:55.52. He also placed third in the 1500 meter run in 4:13.67.
Chris Watson crossed the line first in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.59 seconds.
In the triple jump, Edgar Sactic set a personal-best and moved up to fourth all-time in school history with a triple jump performance of 13.36m (43-10).
What's Next?: A handful of Lions will compete on Saturday at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
