Freshmen Help Lions Blank Life Pacific in GSAC Opener

LA VERNE, Calif. – Freshmen Hailey Garvin and Adiah Edwardson scored their first career collegiate goals and the Vanguard women's soccer team shutout Life Pacific, 3-0, in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday.

Fellow frosh Jasmine Guzman added her second goal of the season as VU won its third straight contest and improved to 5-1-3 overall. The Lions have outscored opponents 10-1 during the three-game win streak.

The Blue and Gold defense stonewalled the Warriors (1-7-0, 0-3-0 GSAC), allowing just three shots – all saved by Jordin Holmquist-Wilder, who shared time in net with Madalyn Morris for the combined shutout.

It marked the fourth straight game the Lions scored multiple goals.

Bethany Urrabazo, Kennedy Cypher and Garvin also were credited with assists as VU outshot LPU by a 10-3 margin and had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

Each team was whistled for just one foul in a cleanly played game.

What Happened?: The Lions forced Warrior keeper Melanie Cruz into a couple of early saves off attempts from Cypher and Alyssa Fong.

Fong started the first scoring sequence for the Blue and Gold on a throw-in in the 23rd minute. Urrabazo got hold of it and sent a pass to Garvin, who took one dribble and beat the LPU keeper to the side netting on the right hand side.

The Lions took two more shots the rest of the half and went into intermission with a 1-0 lead. The only attempt for the Warriors came on the first shot of the game from Edith Mendoza in the second minute.

LPU emerged in the second half looking to get more aggressive, and tested Holmquist-Wilder with shots from Angela Scott-Orihuel and Ellyanna Edwards, but the Lion junior netminder made the stops.

Francesca Lindstrom took the first Lion shot of the second stanza, but Cruz tallied the save. Cruz got lifted for Peyton Reynoso in the 59th minute, and the Lions greeted her with goal number two about six minutes later.

Garvin connected with Cypher, who hit a cross to the far post, where Guzman collected and scored in a wide open net. Guzman moved into a tie for second on the team with her second goal of the year.

The Lions struck for their third goal at the 73:03 mark when Edwardson, making her third appearance this season, received a pass from Rachel Penick and buried a shot from outside the box to the top corner.

Besides the two early shots that Holmquist-Wilder faced to begin the second half, the Warriors were quiet offensively.

Why Is It Important?: The Lions won their GSAC opener for the second straight season.

What's Next?: The Blue and Gold remain on the road, battling Hope International this Saturday at the OC Great Park. Kickoff at Field 18 is set for 7:00 p.m.
