Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 10 Georgetown College

Box Score

COSTA MESA, Calif.Matthew Roussin (SR/Anaheim Hills, CA) collected a match-high 13 kills to lead the No. 3 Vanguard men's volleyball team to a sweep of No. 10 Georgetown (Ky.) on Friday at The Pit. Set scores were 25-17, 25-19, 25-22.

The Lions won their fifth straight and improved to 5-1 on the season. The Tigers fell to 4-2 overall.

What Happened?: Filippo Meoni (SO/Macerata, Italy) added nine kills and Christian Nowtash (SR/Vista, CA) hit .500 with six kills and just one error in 10 swings.

Bryce Thompson (SR/Los Alamitos, CA) handed out 24 assists as the Lions hit .211 (31-16-71) as a team. The Tigers managed just .167 (26-15-66) efficiency, getting seven kills apiece from Ryan Gunn and Miguel Vega.

Tomas Berales (JR/Newburg, OR) led the Lions defensively with 12 digs.

Vanguard had 10 service aces, led by four from Meoni and three more from Thompson. Georgetown had just two aces and 15 service errors.

Set One

Vanguard held a slim 10-9 advantage but used a 6-0 burst to take a 16-9 lead. Thompson had two aces during the run.

The Lions continued to push forward as Roussin's kill made it 20-11. Georgetown rallied with four straight points behind the serving of Tyler Chavez and pulled to within 20-15, prompting a VU timeout.

The two teams traded points, but Vanguard got to set point on a kill from Nowtash. Roussin put the finishing touches on the 25-17 set one victory with a kill.

Set Two

Similar to the first set, the Lions were locked in a tight affair early on but pulled away late.

With the Lions leading 6-4, both teams went back and forth. The Lions still led at 11-8 when Meoni's putaway gave the Lions a four-point edge.

The Tigers crept to within one at 17-16 on a VU attack error – and again at 18-17 on another miscue. But Georgetown couldn't get over the hump.

Meoni's kill and a double block from Glen Linden (SO/Newport Beach, CA) and Meoni gave the Lions a 21-18 lead. After a Georgetown point, the Lions reeled off four straight to take the 25-19 set two victory.

Meoni served out the final three points and came up with aces on the last two.

Set Three

Georgetown led for the first time in the match at 4-3 on a VU attack error.

The Tigers still led at 6-5 – and then were tied with VU at 7-7, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12 and 13-13.

VU scored three straight points to pull in front at 16-13 thanks to a Roussin kill and two Georgetown attack errors.

Both squads exchanged sideouts until the Lions took a 19-15 lead on a Van Groningen smash.

VU's lead fluctuated between three and four points until 23-19, when Georgetown got consecutive points to narrow the gap to two and force a Lion timeout.

Krzysztof Kowalski served into the net to negate any Tiger momentum. Although Tyree Wesley's kill brought Georgetown within 24-22, Gunn's attack error ended the match as VU took the third set 25-22.

Why Is It Important?: The Lions continue to play well in the absence of All-America outside hitter Kyle Anema (SR/La Mirada, CA), defeating their third ranked opponent this season.

What Was Said?: "This group keeps finding different ways to compete together which is really enjoyable for us to see as a coaching staff," said Head Coach Brad Rostratter. "Tonight showed the progression our servers have made throughout the early part of the season from the end line. Proud of the guys continued growth and we are ready for more!"

What's Next?: Vanguard heads out on the road to face Division I CSUN on Wednesday, February 9. First serve is 7:00 p.m.
