PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- The final dual for Vanguard men's wrestling Friday pitted the Lions against Snow College, a community college located in Ephraim, Utah. The Badgers did not give much trouble to the Lions though, who won the dual 43-0.
What Happened?
Dominic De'Altonaga (SO/Poway, CA) took the win at 125-pounds, as the Badgers were open at that class. Julian Leon (FR/Fontana, CA) then claimed a major decision victory over Jacob Waddoups 14-3. Steven Kroesen (JR/Laguna Hills, CA) picked up his third win of the day by netting a major decision victory over Jaxon Johnson 14-4 at 141-pounds. Gabriel Cortez (JR/Covina, CA) then pinned Xavier Perez at 149-pounds in the second period, as VU continued to roll. Ruben Rodriguez (FR/Chula Vista, CA) pushed Rhett Miner around, as he racked up a technical victory 17-0 at 157-pounds. Omar Rosas (SO/El Centro, CA) claimed another victory on the day as he defeated Jace Brower in the 165-pound matchup 8-3. Gerardo Hernandez (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) took on Zack Johnson at 174-pounds and Hernandez took a decision victory 12-5 in a quality performance. Baron Gaunt (SO/Torrance, CA) did not have a large margin of victory in the 184-pound bout against Elijah Kratzer, but he still won 5-1 to keep the good times rolling for the Blue and Gold. Isaiah Hernandez (SO/Selma, CA) then faced Christian Slack and won 8-3, with Mike Ruiz (SO/Orange, CA) making it a clean sweep of victories by defeating David Herring via pin in the heavyweight category.
What was Said? "It was a great day to be a Lion," said Head Coach Caleb Flores. "We wrestled really well. But we have a quick turnaround and have to repeat this performance tomorrow."
What's Next? The Mile High Open tomorrow, as the VU wrestlers will battle it out in the bracket-style competition.
