(RV) Lions Earn 4-1 Victory over SDCC

COSTA MESA, Calif. - After the Women's side earned a 5-0 victory, the (RV) Vanguard University Men's Socer team (3-1, 1-1) was able to replicate their high-powered offensive output against San Diego Christian College (5-2, 1-1) as they earned a 4-1 victory. Marc Trejo and Andrew Robles each recorded a goal and an assist, while Stewart Alvayero scored two goals as the Lions earned their first victory in conference play.

What Happened? The Lions would get on the board a minute and thirty seconds into the match as Marc Trejo would find Andrew Robles streaking down the far side. A couple of touches would put Robles deep in the 18-yard box where he cooly found the back of the net to up the Lions up 1-0. At the 17:18 mark in the first half, Nathaniel Gomez would collect a pass and send a beautiful ball to Trejo who was slicing perfectly behind the Hawks defense. Trejo had plenty of time and found room by the left side of the net to double the Lions' lead.

SDCC was able to get on the board five minutes later as Gael Ruiz found William Nyambo on a run down the near sideline. Nyambo was able to get in close and sent the ball firmly along the turf and into the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Blue and Gold. The Hawks were able to put together two more great looks late in the first half, but Alex Penaloza was able to snuff out both attacks to keep the Lions in front.

Out of the halftime break, Oscar Salas sent a cross over to Stewart Alvayero who tried a bicycle kick but the shot was blocked away to the feet of Robles. Alvayero sprung back up to his feet and Robles sent him the ball who found the back of the net for his second goal of the year. The Lions were able to tack on one more goal as the final horn sounded as Austin Tubbs sent Alvayero a fantastic through ball. Alvayero was able to beat the keeper low and away to seal a 4-1 win for the Blue and Gold.

Why It's Important? The Lions would move their all-time record to 23-2-1 against San Diego Christian with the win today. Andrew Robles would record his team-high third goal of the year today, while Trejo would record his third assist. Trejo currently ranks 39th in the NAIA in assists per game.

Top Performers: Marc Trejo and Andrew Robles each recorded a goal and an assist, while Stewart Alvayero scored two goals for the Pride. Nathaniel Gomez and Austin Tubbs would each record an assist as well.

What They Said: "Going into the game, we told ourselves that we have to work hard to get a win today," said Alvayero. "We really want to win GSAC and our goal is to get all the way to Nationals. Each game is important, no matter how hard or easy they may seem. Our mentality is always to keep each other strong and work as a team and win, which helped us get the victory today."
