Vanguard Outshoot Westmont, But Warriors Top Lions

COSTA MESA, Calif. - The (RV) Vanguard University Men's Soccer team (3-3, 1-3) started their second cycle through their conference opponents as they took on 12th-ranked Westmont College (4-1, 3-0). The Warriors were outshot 20-9 but were much more efficient with their chances as they earned a 3-0 victory over the Blue and Gold.

What Happened? The Warriors got on the board in the ninth minute as Mason Ginni found Samuel Tuscano who directed the ball into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year. WC's Mans Ingvarson made three saves in the first half as the visitors went into the break with a one-goal advantage. Six minutes into the second half, Samuel Tuscano was taken down with an illegal tackle inside the eighteen yard-box and stepped up to take the penalty kick. James Choi (JR/Irvine, CA) guessed correctly and sprawled out for a massive save to keep the Lions in striking distance. The Warriors would strike once again in the 63rd minute as Owen Bates went on a run down the left side of the field and tapped it around a VU defender before finding the back of the net. Four minutes later, Westmont earned another penalty shot with a tackle from behind to stop a goal-scoring opportunity. Braeden Pryor stepped to the spot and cooly sunk the PK for the third and final goal of the day.

Why It's Important? Today was the final home game of the 2021 season for the Blue and Gold as the team dropped to 3-3 and 1-3 in conference play. Their next two contests will come against SDCC and Hope International; the Lions earned a 4-1 victory over SDCC and lost to HIU 0-1.

What They Said: Head Coach Randy Dodge - "I thought we played great so proud of my you guys stepping up to the challenge!  We out played them in every aspect of the game except scoreboard and that is all that matters at the end of the day.  Congrats to Westmont on finishing their chances.  Starting eight underclassmen we are going to take our loses to learn from it.  Loved watching our guys compete today!"

What's Next: Thursday, March 25th at San Diego Christian College for a match starting at 2:30 p.m.
