NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Vanguard University traveled north of Los Angeles to plat at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex where the Matadors defeated the Lions 4-1. This puts a stop to the two-game winning streak for the Blue and Gold and moves their overall record to 6-3.
What Happened? Action started on Court Four as Allyson Scharrer (FR/Newport Beach, CA) and Emilee Hall (SO/Redondo Beach, CA) were defeated in tight sets of 21-16 and 21-18. Lexi McLeod and Seyvion Waggoner outscord Kayla Tinker (SR/San Clemente, CA) and Carly McKinney (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) 21-16, 21-14. The victory was secured by the Matadores when Victoria Rogers and Abbey Sweeting knocked off Hally Herder (SO/Highlands Ranch, CO) and Kenzie Bouse (SR/Willard, MO) by 21-9, 21-10 scores. Vashti Elias Romero (SO/Redlands, CA) and Sydney Irwin (SO/Moorpark, CA) were bested 21-10, 21-12 at the hands of Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan on Court Two.
Why Its Important? The Lions continue to be undefeated against NAIA competition as their three losses are all against NCAA Division I opponents. They are 0-6 lifetime against Cal State University – Northridge with a 4-1 score being their closest to date. Vanguard, who has never backed down from playing against higher competition levels, is 4-29 all-time against NCAA Division I programs while holding a 26-10 record against Division II, NAIA, and Community Colleges.
Notable Performances: Although the match had already been decided, Conley Harris (JR/Brea, CA) and Natalie Escher (JR/Redlands, CA) were victorious over Meagan Carter and Lauren Eknoian by counts of 21-15, 21-13.
What They Said: Head Coach Kris Dorn – "Today was a good reminder that we need to come in & set the tone instead of letting our opponent do it for us. We still had some good shots and our one seed set the pacing. Overall, we need to be our best selves more consistently in practice so that our match play is an extension of that."
