SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Vanguard Men's Soccer Team (2-1, 0-1) opened up conference play on the road against Westmont College (1-1, 1-0) on Thursday afternoon. A goal in the 88th minute by Samuel Tuscano would break the scoreless tie as Westmont would earn their first win of the season while also making their conference debut.
What Happened? Stewart Alvayero was able to put two shots on frame in the span of four minutes in the first half, but both were saved away by Måns Ingvarson. The Pride's backline put together a strong effort in the first half as well as they only allowed three shots on goal. Going into the half, the Warriors held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal while both teams had one corner kick opportunity.
Both teams would have opportunities early in the second half as both teams recorded two shots in the first eight minutes. The defensive battle continued on as Marc Trejo was able to put a shot on goal in the 67th minute that was saved away by Ingvarson. The Warriors would finally breakthrough in the 88th minute as they went on the counterattack with a long clearance. The ball was crossed over to Samuel Tuscano who would beat a Lion defender before firing a shot into the upper half of the net and was mobbed by his teammates by the corner flag.
Why It's Important? The Lions' all-time record against the Warriors fell to 15-26-2 after the match today. Westmont finished with an 8-7 advantage in shots and a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. The goal by Tuscano would be his second of the year.
