SAN MARCOS, Calif. - After pulling out a nail-biter at home, the Vanguard Lions (2-1) fell to the University of Saint Katherine (2-3) by the score of 73-65. Three members of the Blue and Gold would score in double figures, but it would not be enough to overcome a thirty-point night by USK's Maurice Woods.
What Happened? The shooting woes for both teams continued as the Lions shot 40% from the field and 24% from deep, while the Firebirds would shoot 36% from the field and 36% from deep. The Pride's early five-point lead in the first would be their largest in the game as USK would absorb the first punch and hit a buzzer-beater at the end of the first half to go up by four. Foul trouble would give the Lions trouble in the second half as they accrued seven fouls in the first five minutes which would put St. Katherine in the bonus the rest of the way. The Firebirds would continue to push the lead as they built a 16 point advantage by the 7:17 mark in the second half and would maintain a double-digit lead until the final second of regulation.
Why It Matters? The Lions fall to 2-1 on the year while their all-time record against the Firebirds moved to 3-1. The Pride will face off against USK two more times on February fourth and sixth. Over the last three games, Garrett White is averaging 17 points and seven rebounds on the season thus far.
Notable Performances: White had a team-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds and a block. James Moore added 13 points and five rebounds on 5-8 shooting from the field and 3-3 shooting from the line. Isaac Davis had a well-rounded line for the Pride as he tallied four points, four rebounds, seven assists, a block, and a steal.
