GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Vanguard Lions (5-6) took the trip along Interstate 10 to compete in the OUAZ Tournament hosted at Victory Lane Sports Park, facing off against Benedictine University at Mesa (2-5) and Marymount California University (3-6).
Vanguard 4, Benedictine Mesa 1
Starting off on Court One, Conley Harris (SO/Brea, CA) and Gabby Morrison (JR/Paso Robles, CA) earned a two set win over Savannah Cano and Brianna Rivera. The duo won by 21-13, 21-10 counts. The next pairing to go final was #4 which featured Eliana Johnson (JR/Scottsdale, AZ) and Sydney Irwin (FR/Moorpark, CA) winning in mirrored 21-17 scores over Paige Padilla and Mikayla Flores. Vanguard secured the match victory as Emilee Hall (FR/Redondo Beach, CA) and Mackenzie Mitchell (JR/Costa Mesa, CA) won 21-17, 21-16. The Redhawks got on the scoreboard as their 3's pairing of Jackie Woods and Hayden Boucher knocked off Shay Piper (JR/Elizabeth, CO) and Kayla Tinker (SR/San Clemente, CA) in three sets (21-13, 18-21, 15-11). The Blue and Gold rounded out their play with a three set win over Violeti Faleumu and Kat McCullough. Karly Cantu (SR/Spokane, WA) and Kolby Bird (JR/San Diego, CA) walked off the sand with 21-18, 20-22, 15-12 margins.
Vanguard 4, Marymount 1
Once again, the first pairing to finish was Harris and Morrison who took down Aniah Porras and Aniah Philo 21-10, 21-19. Tinker and Piper bounced back from their defeat earlier in the day to win in matching 21-15 counts over Landry Armstrong and Jillian Hewitt. Johnson and Irwin were pushed into three sets but were victorious 21-10, 18-21, 15-9 against Mariana Turner and Rylie Rasar. With the match victory already in hand, Hall and Mitchell rallied back from a 18-21 opening set defeat to win 21-14 and 15-8. With eyes set on their third sweep of the year, Cantu and Bird went into the final set on Court Two. The duos split the sets 16-21 and 22-20 before Brooke Horack and Julia Holden won the final 15-11.
