Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. - Vanguard (10-8, 6-3) hosted Jamestown (11-2) on Tuesday evening and dropped the match in four sets. After falling to the Jimmies in the first set 25-17, the eighth ranked Lions managed to earn the victory in the second set 25-21. Battling hard and keeping last two sets close, the Pride couldn't power past the Jimmies' tough offense and lost the last two sets 25-19 and 25-15.
The Lions grabbed hold of the lead early in the first set, after a kill from Caleb Twyman (JR/Corona, CA) earned the advantage 4-2. From there, the Jimmies found their footing and the lead was exchanged through the set until a kill from Austin Jacob gave the Jimmies an offensive surge. Twyman continued to fight for the Pride and earned two back-to-back kills, cutting into Jamestown's lead 19-14. The Jimmies took the first set of the evening 25-17. Twyman and Cody Watts (FR/Clovis, CA) tied for a team high of four kills during the set.
Kyle Anema (SO/La Mirada, CA) came out with a vengeance during the second set and took the first kill off of Bryce Thompson (SO/Los Alamitos, CA)'s set. Anema went on a four point run to continue the fight against the Jimmies, tying the set 6-6. The lead was exchanged until the Lions capitalized on the Jimmies' error and gained a five point lead with a kill from Watts, forcing Jamestown to call timeout. Dylan Garcia (FR/Los Angeles, CA) rounded out the set with a kill, earning the victory 25-21. Anema tallied nine kills during the second set alone and Thompson tallied 16 assists.
The Jimmies took an early lead in the beginning of the third set, but the Pride came from behind and managed to take the lead off a service ace from Anema, 6-5. Jamestown snagged back the lead off a block from Nick Vanags and Derek Owens, pushing past the Pride with a five point lead. A kill from Garcia put the Lions only two points behind the lead, but couldn't keep up with the onslaught of points from the Jimmies. Jamestown took the third set 25-19.
The fourth set was tight in the beginning with the Pride looking to push the match to five sets and the Jimmies fighting to end the match. After Jamestown took the early lead, Anema fought to keep the set close and his kill cut into the Jimmies' lead 4-3. Jamestown didn't hold back their offensive attack and managed to earn a four point lead over the Lions. Then, the momentum swung the way of Jamestown and they took full control of the fourth set. The Jimmies secured a 25-15 win and the match in four sets.
Anema tallied a team high of 18 kills and nine digs. Watts followed with seven kills and one assist. Thompson finished out the night 43 assists.
