BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Vanguard Lions and California State University - Bakersfield Roadrunners played a pair of matches at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the SRC on Saturday, with CSUB earning victories in both outings. Vanguard drops to 1-3 on the year, with all three losses coming against NCAA opponents, while the Roadrunners are a perfect 4-0.
Game One: Bakersfield 5, Vanguard 0
In the duel between the number one pairings of VU and CSUB, Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat bested Gabby Morrison (JR/Paso Robles, CA) and Kayla Tinker (SR/San Clemente, CA) 21-19, 21-15. Kolby Bird (JR/San Diego, CA) and Conley Harris (SO/Brea, CA) were defeated by scores of 23-21, 21-10 against Emily Hansen and Hana Makonova. On Court Four, Brooke Boiseau and Rafa Bonifacio walked off victorious against the duo of Eliana Johnson (JR/Scottsdale, AZ) and Karly Cantu (SR/Spokane, WA) by 21-9, 21-14 counts. Hannah Manzanares and Hayley McCluskey knocked off Shay Larsen-Piper (JR) and Sydney Irwin (FR/Moorpark, CA) 21-10, 21-13. Emille Hall and Karli Burk (JR/Yucaipa, CA) fell 21-16, 21-10 to Leisa Elisaia and Jazleigh Ortiz.
Game Two: Bakersfield 5, Vanguard 0
In the grudge match, the Lions mixed up their top two pairings before reordering the final three sets; the Roadrunners played their top four teams in identical fashion, only switching out the fifth pair. After falling in the opening set, Morrison and Harris took the second set 21-19 before ultimately falling 15-11 in the decisive frame. The pair of Makonova and Hansen tripped up Bird and Tinker by 21-9, 21-11 scores. Larsen-Piper and Cantu were defeated 21-10, 21-15 on Court Three. Manzanares and McCluskey earned a 21-14, 21-11 victory over Hall and Irwin. Playing the first time on the day, Ericka Snopko and Caroline Benke walked off the sand with a 17-21, 21-11, 15-5 victory.
