Lions Fall In Series Opener; Game Two Suspended for Darkness

ATHERTON, Calif. -  Menlo College (7-9, 2-3) hosted Vanguard University (11-4, 0-1) on Friday afternoon, where the Oaks took game one after a late surge in the bottom of the ninth inning 11-10 and the second game was halted due to darkness. The second game will be resumed at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, before the normally schedualed doubleheader between the Lions and the Oaks.

Game 1: Menlo College 11, Vanguard University 10

The Pride came out swinging, as Aki Buckson (JR/Silverdale, WA) homered on the first pitch of the game to immediately give Vanguard the advantage. Both teams struggled to capitalize on their runners on base and it wasn't until the fourth inning that Menlo managed to score to tie the game 1-1. Vanguard then got on the board after Buckson singled down the left side and scored two runners on third and second in the fifth inning to tally the Lion's lead 3-1. The Blue and Gold recorded three more runs during the top of the seventh after a double from Joe Johnson (JR/Medford, OR), a sacrifice fly by Isaiah Lee (SO/Santa Ana, CA), and capitalizing on a wild pitch from the Oaks. Menlo began their comeback after recording four runs during the bottom of the seventh off a triple and a double to narrow Vanguard's lead 6-5. The Lions added two runs in both the eighth and the ninth inning to extend their lead 10-5, but the Oaks had a late surge of six runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the victory 11-10.

Buckson secured three RBI from two hits during his four at-bats and tallied two runs. Sam Hackl (JR/Vienna, Austria) posted nine putouts behind the plate and Johnson recorded five outs from first base. Jared Greer was identified with the loss.

Game 2: Menlo College 7, Vanguard University 6 (Halted - Top 7)

The Oaks snagged the lead in the bottom of the first inning with three runs. The Pride retaliated by recording two runs in the bottom of the third. With a runner on third and second base, Johnson sacrifice flied to score Elijah Weeks (SO/Murrieta, CA) and a single from Lee sent home Buckson to narrow the Oak's lead 3-2. Menlo capitalized on two runners on base and added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lions responded well again and tallied four runs during the top of the sixth inning. Johnson kicked off the inning with a triple to center field and scored on a wild pitch. Grady Conner (SR/Costa Mesa, CA) also tripled to center and scored on a wild pitch as well. Matthew Land (JR/Eugene, OR) was the third straight batter to triple and earned two RBI with runners on first and third. The Oaks collected two more runs during the bottom of the sixth and the game was then halted due to darkness.

Next Game: Saturday, February 21st at Menlo College in a doubleheader at 11:00 am.
