COSTA MESA, Calif. - The Lions came out of the series and concluded their 2019 GSAC stint against William Jessup University Thursday afternoon. The Lions fell in both contests which concludes the regular season with 31-20 overall and 17-15 confernece record. Prior to the game, the nine Lion seniors were honored for their stand out careers and accomplishments on and off the field at Vanguard.
Game 1: Vanguard 6, William Jessup University 10
Vanguard took the lead in the fourth inning when Landon Riker (JR/Marysville, WA) picked up three RBI off a double to score Sam Neufeld (SR/Indio, CA), Elijah Weeks (FR/Murrieta, CA) and Maxx Mahon (SR/Lexington, KY). VU also picked up another run from Riker on a hit from Caleb Squire (SR/Arvada, CO) to advance the Lion lead to 6-2. Unfortunately, the Lions did not post another run during the game. The Warriors, on the other hand, worked up eight runs across the final two innings for the win.
Game 2: Vanguard University 9, William Jessup University 10
The Warriors picked up two runs in both the first and second inning that left the Lions scrambling to adjust. It wasn't until the third inning that Vanguard broke open the game by collecting three runs from Sam Neufeld, Omar Ortiz (JR/Las Vegas, NV) and Maxx Mahon to put the Lions down 4-3. In the fourth, VU utilized three hits to tally two runs. The Lions picked up three more runs the fifth inning, starting when Mahon hit a sacrifice fly to left field that sent Isaiah Lee (FR/Santa Ana, CA) home. The Warriors bounced back and scored three more runs to take the lead 10-8. Later in the game, Lee scored off Squire's double to center field to narrow the score, but the Lions could not overcome the Warriors.
