IRVINE, Calif. - Vanguard hit the field Wednesday night at The Orange County Great Park and earned a 10-2 win over the Flames. The victory marked the final matchup with Bethesda of the year and the 4-0 sweep for VU. The Lions improved to 31-16 overall and remains at 17-11 in conference with four games to go on the GSAC slate. 

Game 1: Vanguard 10, Bethesda 2

Neither team scored through four innings, but the Flames found their way onto the board in the fifth. Bethesda posted two runs after a batter was hit and knocked in. The second run came on a Lion mistake. Later in the game, the Flames had a loaded bases opportunity to score, but Schuyler Hill (SR/Long Beach, CA) got the Lions out of the inning with a strikeout. Vanguard retaliated in the bottom of the sixth with a trio of runs to take its first lead of the game. Julio Rivera (SR/Puerto Rico) and Landon Riker (JR/Marysville, WA) both walked and Caleb Squire (SR/Arvada, CO) singled to load the bases. Omar Ortiz (JR/Las Vegas, NV) came in clutch with two outs, double for three RBI. In the seventh, VU expanded on its lead when Chad Sutton (SO/Scottsdale, AZ) sent a pitch over the fence. Then, Rivera drew a walk and Riker brought him in for the 5-2 score. Ortiz continued the inning with a two RBI single to left center. Joe Johnson (SO/Medford, OR) kept the inning rolling with a single before Hunter White (SR/Galt, CA) singled through the right side for one more RBI. The final Lion runs came off a two run homer from Riker after Rivera singled to center.
