SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Lions split Friday's double header with The Master's, claiming the game one win, but falling 7-0 in game two. No. 15 Vanguard is now 18-3 overall and 8-2 in the GSAC. TMU is now 10-8-1 and 3-5 in conference competition.
Game 1: Vanguard 11, The Master's 6
Both teams posted one run in the first inning, but Vanguard tallied a second run in the third to go up 2-1. It started with a Sam Neufeld (SR/Indio, CA) walk and he advanced to second on Caleb Squire (SR/Arvada, CO)'s ground out. Landon Riker (JR/Marysville, WA) followed with a single to score Neufeld. In the fourth, Vanguard used a two out rally to advance their lead. Grady Conner (JR/Costa Mesa, CA) walked and Chad Sutton (SO/Scottsdale, AZ) sent a ball over the fence for two VU runs. In the fifth, the Lions took advantage of three walks to open up the inning. With the bases loaded, Julio Rivera (SR/Puerto Rico) hit a sacrifice fly to bring one Lion around. Conner came through next with a RBI single and Sutton followed with his second home run of the game to set the Lions ahead 9-1. The Mustangs fought back with one run in the fifth, three runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh. But Vanguard added two more runs in their final at bat on hits from Rivera and Conner. Jakob Farmer (SO/Norwalk, CA) closed out the game for VU with two strike outs in the bottom of nine. Michael Kashou (JR/Anaheim, CA) earned his fourth win after tossing five innings with six strikeouts.
Game 2: Vanguard 0, The Master's 7
The Mustangs took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first and two runs in the second. Vanguard threatened in the third with two runners on, but the Lions stranded them on base. TMU added two more, and remained efficent defensively, allowing only one hit from Squire and one from Johnson. Although they only gave up four hits, the Lions fell 7-0 to the Mustangs.
