SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Lions used a five run first to take out the No. 5 Warriors and collect their 20th win of the year. In game two of the four game series, Westmont evened things out with a 2-0 win. Vanguard is now 20-10 overall and 9-5 in GSAC play.
Game 1: Vanguard 7, Westmont 4
The five run first inning fueled the Lions past Westmont in game one. Grady Conner (JR/Costa Mesa, CA) singled with one out and Joe Johnson (SO/Medford, OR) drew a walk. Omar Ortiz (JR/Las Vegas, NV) singled to left field for two RBI and Maxx Mahon (SR/Lexington, KY) added another single to bring Ortiz in. Julio Rivera (SR/Puerto Rico) walked and Chad Sutton (SO/Scottsdale, AZ) doubled to give Vanguard the 5-0 lead. Westmont added four runs across the first three innings, and then Lions added one more to their total on a solo homer from Landon Riker (JR/Marysville, WA). In the sixth, Elijah Weeks (FR/Murrieta, CA) doubled down the left field line and scored on Riker's base hit. Michael Kashou (JR/Anaheim, CA) went six innings against the Warriors before Joey Jennison (JR/Danville, CA) and Matt Lester (JR/Salem, OR) closed the game out.
Game 1: Vanguard 0, Westmont 2
The second game of the double header was a pitchers duel, with both teams staying scoreless for three and a half innings, until Westmont got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Warriors utilized two hits to score two runs for the lead. Vanguard collected two hits across the next few innings from Mahon and Rivera, but couldn't convert them into runs and fell 0-2.
