IRVINE, Calif. - On Friday, the Lions headed south to the OC Great Park to take on CUI (4-5) and Loyola Marymount (12-6) in a tri-match. Vanguard (8-8) suffered their fourth straight defeat against NCAA Division I and II foes, while still maintaining a five game win streak over NAIA competition. Four of the last five games for the Blue and Gold are against NAIA teams.
Loyola Marymount 5, Vanguard 0
The LMU Lions hold a 4-0 record all-time over the Pride. Flight five was the first to go final as Mackenzie Mitchell (SO/Costa Mesa, CA) and Angel Caroll fell by 13-21, 9-21 counts. Charity Dennis (SR/Cypress, CA) played with a new partner as Aubryn Coale competed in her first ever beach volleyball competition Friday. The dup was defeated by identical 11-21 scores. Hannah Holder (JR/Irvine, CA) and Kelli Dowell (SR/Redlands, CA) lost 18-21, 12-21 tallies which clinched the victory for LMU. Karly Cantu (JR/Spokane, WA) and Brooke Wilsman (SR/Lakeland, FL) partnered up for the first time and were knocked off 14-21, 9-21. Rounding out play for the Blue and Gold was Dani Erdelatz (JR/Stockton, CA) and Kayla Darm (FR/San Juan Capistrano, CA) who were bested 13-21, 11-21.
CUI 4, Vanguard 1
In the first flight, Caroll and Mitchell were topped by Vanessa Bernzen and Asia O'Neil 7-21, 4-21. Coale and Dennis earned their first win as a pair 21-10, 21-16 over Veronica Wood and Hanna Wilson. Dowell and Holder were the next pairing to go final, with scores of 11-21, 14-21 showing on the scoreboard. As Cantu and Wilsman walked off the sand, the Eagles had secured the match victory behind a three set victory. VU lost set one 14-21 before taking set two 21-18 and ultimately falling 11-15. The final flight saw Erdelatz and Darm winning set one 21-19 before falling 18-21 and 19-17.
