COSTA MESA, Calif. - Vanguard Wrestling had their second home meet of the year against the 13-ranked Menlo College. The Oaks came into the matchup with a 2-0 record in dual meets while the Lions entered with a 0-4 record in duals. The Lions went down 18 points early due to three forfeits and eventually were defeated 42-3 despite most of the matches being very close.
The Lions had to forfeit in the 125-pound, 165-pound, and 197-pound division due to injury. Sunny Luna (FR/Victorville, CA) came out and picked up four points with four escapes but Blaysen Terukina earned the decision victory with a 10-4 victory. Eric Reyes earned the second Oak victory of the night with a takedown and a reversal over Andrew Gomez (SR/Yorba Linda, CA). Gabriel Cortez (FR/Covina, CA) fought hard but lost a narrow 1-2 decision to Joseph Dominguez who scored on an escape and an advantage in riding time.
Devin Everk dominated early but Brian Isaias (FR/Villa Park, CA) had an escape early and racked up five late points with two takedowns and a reversal, eventually losing in another narrow decision 6-7. Armon Fayyazi (JR/Irvine, CA) earned the first Lion victory of the night to the approval of the Vanguard faithful as he won a 3-1 decision with a takedown and an escape. Anthony Orozco came back strong, as he pinned Andrew Shin (FR/Glendora, CA) in the second, and Elias Kennyard finished out the night with another pin as he defeated Joshua Sapien (JR/Hacienda Heights, CA) in the first.
"You have to give Menlo a lot of credit, they are thirteenth ranked team in the country for a reason," said Head Coach Caleb Flores. "Our guys fought really hard. We need to be quicker to make mid-match adjustments, but that is something that will come with time and experience."
Overall Menlo won three matches by forfeit, four by decision, and two by fall. Vanguard won one match by decision.
Next Match: Thursday, December 12th at Life Pacific College at 6:00 p.m.
