Fifth Inning Outburst Lifts Lions Over SDC

COSTA MESA, Calif. — The Golden State Athletic Conference series opener between Vanguard University and San Diego Christian College took less than two hours to complete as a solid pitching performance from Jordan Dreibelbis (SR/Las Vegas, NV) and a quiet confidence among the Lions drove them to the 4-0 win. The Pride logged 11 hits on the day, putting up seven more than the Hawks, and produced one four-run inning to win it. Tanner Perry (SR/El Cajon, CA) grabbed the first hit of the day in the first frame and hit the first RBI single of the day in the fifth. "I didn't try to do too much. I tried to put the ball in play, and it turned out good today," Perry said of his 3-for-4 day at the plate. "Today, we played with confidence. We did what we had to do to get a win, trusted ourselves and it came out to be a victory." The Blue and Gold now hang on to a five-game win streak and look to extend it during tomorrow's doubleheader against the Hawks. Perry also said Vanguard has . "We've figured out the kind of team we want to be and we've been executing what we have to do to come out with the win."

Four scoreless innings kept the game moving at a steady pace until the fifth inning when the bases quickly loaded. Sam Neufeld (JR/Indio, CA) was on the receiving end of a wild pitch, and Lucas Martinez (SR/Fairfax, VA) singled to secure Bryce Wetherell (SR/Chattaroy, WA)'s spot at first as the pinch runner. A well-placed bunt by Grady Conner (SO/Costa Mesa, CA) loaded up the bases in time for Perry to step up to the plate and single through the left side. Josh Weeks (SO/Murrieta, CA) flied out to center, scoring Wetherell on the throw in. Shane Elias-Calles (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) singled up the middle to send Conner in to score, and the bases became loaded once again as Michael Fuchs (SR/Irvine, CA) and Joe Johnson (FR/Medford, OR) both singled through the left and right sides respectively. Johnson's single, however scored Elias-Calles, rounding out the fourth and final run of the game.

Dreibelbis threw seven strikeouts in the nine innings pitched, walked two batters, and gave up four hits. The SDCC counterpart also threw seven strikeouts and walked two batters. At the plate, Joe Johnson went 2-for-4 while Lucas Martinez was 2-for-3. Elias-Calles, Fuchs, Rodriguez and Conner each contributed with one hit on the day.

Next Game: Saturday, April 7th against San Diego Christian College at 11:00 a.m. (DH)
