HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - The Lions hosted their second contest in program in history as a tri-match feature California State University - Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount hit the sand on Saturday. During the outing, the Blue and Gold first squared off against the Roadrunners falling 5-0 and the Lions from LMU took home the final match of the day 5-0.
Bakersfield 5, Vanguard 0
The opening pair of the day was Kayla Tinker (JR/San Clemente, CA) and Gabby Morrison (FR/Paso Robles, CA) taking on the best pairing from Bakersfield. The Roadrunner pair won 21-19 and then handled business 21-9 in the final set. Kelli Dowell (JR/Redlands, CA) and Hannah Holder (SO/Irvine, CA) played a tight contest which ended 21-19 and 21-16 in favor of CSUB. Dani Erdelatz (SO/Stockton, CA) and Charity Dennis (JR/Cypress, CA) won the first frame 21-14 before the Roadrunners won the second frame 21-12 before the decisive third set was 15-11. Karly Cantu (SO/Spokane, WA) and Eliana Johnson (FR/Scottsdale, AZ) competed hard and came up just short by 21-18 and 21-19 counts. Karli Burk (FR/Yucaipa, CA) and Bree Belton (FR/Riverside, CA) played to identical 21-12 scores in each of the two matches. In the exhibition match of both teams, CSUB took the mantle 21-6 and 21-7 over Mackenzie Mitchell (FR/Costa Mesa, CA) and Angel Caroll.
Loyola Marymount 5, Vanguard 0
Next up, a battle of the Lions from Vanguard and Loyola Marymount was featured on the beach beginning with Tinker and Morrison competing to 21-9 and 21-12 counts. Holder and Dowell were defeated 21-10 and 21-14 while Erdelatz and Dennis fought to 21-13 and 21-19 scores. The duo of Johnson and Cantu was defeated 21-7 and 21-9 while Belton and Burk were bested 21-6 in each round. During the exhibition matchup with Caroll and Mitchell, the final was 21-11 and 21-6.
