LAKESIDE, Calif. — After exploding onto the field in yesterday's contest, Vanguard went into today's pair of games with sights set on two victories. For the third time this season, the Pride found themselves heading into extra innings and came out on top. In game two, the Blue and Gold fell to San Diego Christian College, but will walk away with the series win.
Game 1: Vanguard 8, San Diego Christian 4
The Hawks jumped at the chance to score first and did so in the bottom of the ninth, putting up one run. Vanguard answered back in the third with two runs. Josh Weeks (SO/Murrieta, CA) singled and Julio Rivera (JR/Puerto Rico) singled down right center to push the runners forward. Tanner Perry (SR/El Cajon, CA) found the gap and sent a single through the right side, bringing Weeks in. Chad Sutton (FR/Scottsdale, AZ) reached on a fielder's choice, resulting in an out at home on Rivera. Lucas Martinez (SR/Fairfax, VA) singled with two outs and two on, and Perry ran in for the Pride. The game came to a standstill until the fifth inning where each team scored. Perry was up to bat first and walked. Sutton almost immediately brought Perry in with a double to left center. The game remained tied at four runs a piece until the top of the tenth inning. Perry and Sutton started things off with a pair of hits, and Perry landed at second on a wild pitch. Sutton's single to center field allowed Perry scored on the throw in. L Nobiensky pinch ran for Sutton and scored on a single from Fuchs. Conner Grady made an appearance in the tenth to pinch run for Fuchs and Shane Elias-Calles (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) was hit by a pitch to advance the runner. The pair came home on a double from weeks to seal the win for the Pride.
Michael Kashou (SO/Anaheim, CA) pitched four innings, gave up four hits, three runs and walked one. Taylor Wilson (FR/Keller, TX) saw some action in one inning, giving up two hits and one run, striking out two while Ryan Daugherty (JR/Laguna Niguel, CA) pitched three full innings, allowing one hit, no runs and striking out three. Alex Camacho (JR/Stockton, CA) took to the hill in the final inning, striking out two batters on three batters faced.
"Game 1 we played really solid defense and had timely hit," said assistant coach Mike Thompson. In the tenth, we carried some momentum from having our pitchers get some big key outs and took advantage of every base runner we got on and had our best offensive inning of the game. It was great to see Camacho come in and have a solid tenth. He looked electric on the mound today."
Game 2: San Diego Christian 6, Vanguard 0
San Diego Christian bounced back from the loss and took game two in a shutout victory over the Lions. Despite the loss, the Pride made some good moves, logging five hits on the game, just shy of SDCC's six hits. Fuchs was 2-for-2 in the box and Perry went 2-for-4. Travis McFarland (SO/Corona, CA) rounded out the Pride's performance with one hit on two at bats. Schyuler Hill pitched 2.1 innings and gave up five hits, five runs, walking four and striking out four. Tanner Bellamy (JR/Las Vegas, NV) pitched one inning, giving up one hit, one run and struck out one, while Jakob Farmer (FR/Norwalk, CA) pitched two innings and struck out four batters.
