LAKESIDE, Calif. — A solid day at the plate for Vanguard University put the Pride on a direct path to a victory at San Diego Christian College. The 6-0 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Hawks improves the Blue and Gold to 7-8 overall and 5-2 in GSAC while SDCC drops to 7-9 on the season and 2-5 in conference. The Pride put in work in the box outhitting the Hawks 11-3. Tanner Perry (SR/El Cajon, CA) and Chad Sutton (FR/Scottsdale, AZ) finished the day 2-4 at the plate and Joe Johnson (FR/Medford, OR) logged two hits on three at bats.
Michael Fuchs (SR/Irvine, CA) reached base first for the Blue and Gold in the second inning and was brought in off a single hit by Sam Neufeld (JR/Indio, CA). Julio Rivera (JR/Puerto Rico) was caught looking and closed the inning leaving two runners stranded. Perry opened the third inning with a bang and doubled, later advancing on a wild pitch. Sutton singled and Perry flew home to score the only run of the inning. Action picked up again in the fifth with a lone run from Perry, who was walked and advanced on a Sutton single, and Lucas Martinez (SR/Fairfax, VA) picked up the RBI with a single to left field. Vanguard saw the heap of their runs in the seventh inning. A repeated scenario of a double in conjunction with a wild pitch landed Perry at third base with Sutton in the box. Sutton walked and Martinez doubled to left field to pick up his second RBI of the day. A balk worked in the Lions' favor and Sutton scored. Bryce Wetherell (SR/Chattaroy, WA), who pinch ran for Martinez, reach home on a sac-fly from Elias-Calles to end the inning.
Jordan Dreibelbis (SR/Las Vegas, NV) pitched all nine innings for the Lions and put six strikeouts in the books, walking only two out of 32 batters faced.
