SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Vanguard University's first Golden State Athletic Conference road series at Westmont College ended on a high note with a loss and a win on the second day of play to claim the series 2-1 over the Warriors. Game 1: Westmont 5, Vanguard 2
The Blue and Gold were kept quiet throughout the game but finally got a word in in the fifth inning. Julio Rivera (JR/Puerto Rico) popped up to second base and Tanner Perry (SR/El Cajon, CA) reached first on an error. Perry advanced to third on a ground-out from Shane Elias-Calles (SR/Mission Viejo, CA). Fortunately for Perry, Lucas Martinez (SR/Fairfax, VA) stepped up to the plate and knocked a double down the left field line to send Perry in to score. Bryce Wetherell (SR/Chattaroy, WA) entered the inning to pinch run for Martinez and Chad Sutton (FR/Scottsdale, AZ) was walked. The pair were left stranded as Travis McFarland (SO/Corona, CA) went down swinging. In the eighth inning, Michael Fuchs (SR/Irvine, CA) singled to right field to reach base and Josh Weeks (SO/Murrieta, CA) grounded out to third to advance Fuchs. Joe Johnson (FR/Medford, OR) doubled to center field bringing Fuchs home. Westmont scored in the second, third and again in the eighth. Josh Bailly (SR/Union City, CA) (0-4) pitched three innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs. Bailly walked two batters and struck out one. Taylor Wilson (FR/Keller, TX) pitched three innings and gave up one hit and no runs while Michael Kashou (SO/Anaheim, CA) pitched one, allowed one hit and gave upon one run. Ryan Daugherty (JR/Laguna Niguel, CA) took the mount to close out the final inning allowing two hits and one run. Johnson and Weeks picked up a RBI a piece and Fuchs was 3-4 in the box in game one.
Game 2: Vanguard 2, Westmont 0
Two runs in the first and sixth inning was all it took for Vanguard to claim the victory for the second game of the day. Perry started the game off walking to first and advanced to second on a steal. Elias-Calles reached base on a fielder's choice and both Perry and Elias-Calles took advantage of an error to advance. Perry scored on a sac-fly from Martinez and Sutton stepped up to the plate with one out on the board. Sutton went down looking and Fuchs flied out to right field to end the inning. The reached a stalemate until Elias-Calles scored late in the sixth inning. Elias-Calles reached scoring position on a sac-bunt from Martinez and Fuchs was walked. Weeks singled to first and Elias-Calles scored. Sam Neufeld (JR/Indio, CA) flied out to end the inning and strand the runners. Schuyler Hill (JR/Long Beach, CA) pitched all seven innings and gave up four hits. Perry and Elias-Calles each logged a hit in the second game and went 1-3 at the plate.
