COSTA MESA, Calif. — In a non-conference match against University of Redlands, Vanguard found themselves overcome by the Bulldogs by the eighth inning and could not bounce back to grab the win. Vanguard drops to 2-4 overall and Redlands improves to 1-0.

Assistant coach Mike Thompson said the team remains hopeful for the remainder of the season. "It's early in the season. It's better to go through these things early, Thompson said. "We have a couple guys struggling to bat right now that we know are better hitters, but we're playing great defense right now. We just need to do a better job of eliminating the walks and capitalizing on big opportunities."

Redlands roared into action and put up one run in the top of the first. In the bottom, Tanner Perry (SR/El Cajon, CA) was walked and advanced on a single from Josh Weeks (SO/Murrieta, CA). Shane Elias-Calles (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) flied out to right field to earn the RBI and bring Perry in for the only run of the inning. Redlands broke through the Lions defense in the top of the fourth to put up another run, and saw their best inning in the bottom of the fifth to add four more. The Bulldogs tacked on a run in the sixth and rounded out scoring with three runs in the eighth. Vanguard battled back in the bottom of the sixth and put up two runs. Perry singled up the middle and advanced on hits from Weeks and Elias-Calles. A Michael Fuchs (SR/Irvine, CA) single brought Perry in to score for the Lions and Fuchs was brought home on a single from Sam Neufeld (JR/Indio, CA). Unfortunately for the Lions, the three runs would be their last of the day.

Michael Kashou (1-1) pitched five full innings, allowing five earned runs and three walks. Perry and Fuchs, who each picked up a RBI and scored runs, went 1-4 in the box while Weeks, Neufeld, and Lucas Martinez (SR/Fairfax, VA) were 1-3 at the plate.
