COSTA MESA, Calif. — The non-conference series between Vanguard University (RV) and University of Antelope Valley concluded with a doubleheader at Dean Harvey Field. Antelope Valley won both games on the day to drop the series 2-1. With the loss, Vanguard moves to 2-3 overall while the Pioneers improve to 2-1 on the season.

Game 1: Antelope Valley 14, Vanguard 3

The Pioneers were off to a quick start, scoring one run in the first inning on a wild pitch. Tanner Perry (SR/El Cajon, CA) was quick to respond in the bottom of the first with a single, and Lucas Martinez (SR/Fairfax, VA) seized the opportunity for a solid bunt to get on base and advance Perry. Vanguard took advantage of a wild pitch and an error by Antelope Valley and scored put up two runs. The Pioneers posted one more run in the third inning and again in the fifth. Vanguard scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Perry hit a sac-fly to bring Chad Sutton (FR/Scottsdale, AZ) home for their final run. UVA put up two runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh. Vanguard held off the Pioneers in the eighth, but UAV scored six runs to secure the win in the top of the ninth inning.

Vanguard finished with three runs, six hits and committed one error while UAV finished with 14 runs, 15 hits and committed two errors. The Lions cycled through six pitchers, with Schuyler Hill (JR/Long Beach, CA) (0-9), pitching five innings. Shane Elias-Calles (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) was 2-4 at the plate in Game 1 and Perry was 1-3.

Game 2: Antelope Valley 3, Vanguard 2

Antelope Valley was not as quick on the start in Game 2, scoring two runs in the second inning. In the bottom of the third inning, the Lions battled back with two runs of their own. Perry smacked one out to left center for the double and Josh Weeks (SO/Murrieta, CA) followed with his own double to bring Perry in to score. Michael Fuchs (SR/Irvine, CA) singled to right field to send Weeks, who advanced to third on the throw, running home. UAV responded with their third and final run in the fourth inning. Hits were slim for the Lions who finished with four hits, two runs and committed one error while UAV finished with five hits, three runs and no errors.

Josh Bailly (SR/Union City, CA) (1-0) pitched the full seven innings and struck out six batters while the Pioneers used two pitchers. Sam Neufeld (JR/Indio, CA) was 1-2 at the plate and Perry finished the game 1-3. Vanguard left four players on base and UAV had eight.
