SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Vanguard Lions (19-14,11-5 GSAC) went on the road to start a weekend series against Westmont College (16-11,7-7 GSAC). Despite an impressive day at the plate for Shane Elias-Calles (JR/Mission Viejo, CA), the Lions were unable to get the result they wanted. In the end, the Lions fell to the Warriors with a final score of 5-4.
Trouble was in sight for the Lions in the bottom of the second as Westmont posted two runs off of a triple. The innings went by fast with batters being retired quickly on both sides until Elias-Calles came up to bat in the fifth inning with runners on first and second and hit a three run homer to left field. Unfortunately, Westmont answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 5-3. Elias-Calles gave Vanguard one more run in the seventh inning with a sac fly to centerfield, but that would be the last run of the day.
Monty McCasland (SR/Bushland, TX) stood on the mound for the Lions today. McCasland went for six innings and earned five strikeouts while allowing seven hits. After his six, McCasland handed the ball over to
Michael Kashou (FR/Anaheim, CA) who closed out the last two innings.
Next Game: Saturday, March 24th at Westmont College at 12:00 p.m.
