Oaks Sweep Lions in Three-Game Series

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - After suffering defeat at the hands of Menlo (22-5, 11-2) a day prior, the Vanguard University Lions (19-12, 11-4) hoped to turn their fortunes around in this double-header. The Lions came close in game one, losing 5-6, while losing game two 1-10. These results see the Oaks switch places with the Pride in the standings, taking control of first place.

Game One: Menlo 6, Vanguard 5

Game one started off slow, with neither team registering a run in the opening two innings. However, The Blue and Gold scored first, earning two runs in the top of the third. With Brock Eissman (SR/San Clemente, CA), Trai Patrick (SR/Everett, WA), and Michael Fuchs (JR/Irvine, CA) all on base, Josh Weeks (FR/Murrieta, CA) stepped up and singled. Patrick and Eissman scored, but both runs were unearned, due to a previous error by third base. Although the Oaks failed to respond in the bottom of the third, they tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Furthermore, they took the lead with another two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The remainder of the contest saw the scoring spread among the final four innings. The Lions scored a run in the top of the seventh and eighth innings, while the Oaks scored a run in the bottom of the ninth and 11th innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Shane Elias-Calles (JR/Mission Viejo, CA) hit a homer to left field. Four different players pitched for the Pride, with Chris Lumanlan (SR/Irvine, CA) starting and pitching the first 5.1 innings. Christian Sheehan (SR/Redondo Beach, CA), Josh Bailly (JR/Union City. CA), and Jake Mellenthin (SR/New Plymouth, ID) pitched the final 4.2 innings.

Game Two: Menlo 10, Vanguard 1

It was the Oaks who struck first in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. They scored another eight runs, until the Blue and God finally scored a run of their own in the top of the sixth. Patrick doubled to left field, allowing Sam Neufeld (SO/Indio, CA) to hit home plate. Another four players pitched for the Pride, with Tyler Steele (SO/Kingsburg, CA) starting and pitching the opening 2.1 innings. Tyler Skinner (JR/Dos Palos, CA), Akoni Arriaga (SR/Wailuku, HI), and Michael Kashou (FR/Anaheim, CA) pitched the final 3.2 innings.

Next Game: Tuesday, March 21st against Marymount California at 2:30 p.m.
