COSTA MESA, Calif. — One win wasn't enough for Vanguard (13-7,8-1 GSAC) this weekend. The Lions came back to face San Diego Christian (3-10,2-7 GSAC) in a double header to wrap up the series and came out with a sweep. In game one, the bats were flying as Vanguard got 15 hits in all to earn a final score of 10-4. Game two was all about the pitching as Tyler Steel earned Vanguard's first shut out of the season. Game two ended with the score at 2-0.
Game One: Vanguard 10, San Diego Christian 4
The first inning was slow for both teams with zeros posted on either side, but San Diego started off the score of the day in the top of the second. Vanguard answered immediately. Shane Elias-Calles (JR/Mission Viejo, CA) took advantage of being hit by a pitch and stole third base and then scored on an error. Brandon Sandoval (SR/Fallbrook, CA) earned the second run with a RBI single to second base.
Tanner Perry (JR/El Cajon, CA) started off the third inning with his second homerun of the season. After Trai Patrick (SR/Everett, WA) stole home, Josh Weeks (FR/Murrieta, CA) hit a RBI single to left center that drove in Michael Fuchs (JR/Irvine, CA) and gave Vanguard a four run lead. The fourth inning was quiet for both teams, but Vanguard picked it back up in the fifth as Weeks singled to left right field and brought in Elias-Calles. Kody Wright (SO/Bakersfield, CA) came up to the plate with runners at the corners and hit a single to center field that drove in Weeks. After five innings, Vanguard was up, 7-1.
The sixth inning saw another zero posted for the Hawks, but three more runs for the Lions. Tanner Perry reached on an error by third base and Trai Patrick took the opportunity to hit his third homer of the season. With two runners in scoring position, Weeks came up and hit a single to right field, driving in Grady Conner (FR/Costa Mesa, CA). The Hawks tried their best to come back, earning a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, but it wasn't enough. The finals score stood at 10-4.
Chris Lumanlan (SR/Irvine, CA) (3-1) started on the mound for Vanguard. Lumanlan went for six innings and earned eight strikeouts before handing it off. Michael Kashou (FR/Anaheim, CA) and Tyler Skinner (JR/Dos Palos, CA) came in for an inning each, and Akoni Arriaga (SR/Wailuku, HI) closed it out. Josh Weeks led at the dish, going 3-3, but Patrick (2-4), Perry (2-5), and Bryce Wetherell (JR/Chattaroy, WA) (2-3) all made their presence known.
Game Two: Vanguard 2, San Diego Christian 0
While game one had stellar batting, game two was all about defense. Tyler Steel (5-0) was on the mound for all seven innings, picking up six strike outs along the way. In outfield, Brandon Sandoval and Grady Conner had Steele's back, catching a combined nine fly balls.
There was little contact made from either side. Vanguard had four hits while San Diego Christian had one, but Vanguard made the most of what they had. After three innings with both teams posting zeros, Vanguard posted two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Tanner Perry started off the fourth inning by hitting a double to left field, and Brock Eissman (SR/San Clemente, CA) followed right after with a single to left. Michael Fuchs came up to advance the runners with a single to right field giving Shane Elias-Calles loaded bases. Elias-Calles reached on a fielder's choice and brought in Tanner Perry. Michael Fuchs took advantage of a wild pitch to bring in the last run of the day.
