PHOENIX, Ariz. – Vanguard (24-9-1, 14-5) got back on track by winning 3-1 over Arizona Christian (9-20, 6-16) in the opening game of the weekend series. The 15th ranked Lions are tied in the win column with GSAC leading Westmont as the chase for the conference crown heats up in the final month of play. Sean Isaac (SR/Redondo Beach, CA) (9-1) threw eight innings before handing the ball off to Michael Jordan (SR/Murrieta, CA) who sealed the deal for the 10th time this year.
The Blue and Gold struck first in the top of the second frame as Matt Harris (SR/Seaside, CA) singled to center field bringing home Trai Patrick (JR/Everett, WA), who reached base on a double to right center field. ACU tied the contest in the last half of the fifth inning.
Vanguard took control of the game in the seventh inning with only one out remaining. They captured the two runs off a pair of errors and a drawn walk. Inside the box, Patrick knocked in two of the three RBI's while Paul Keating (SR/Oceanside, CA) and Harris, who had a perfect on base percentage today, combined for four of the Pride's five hits.
The two squads meet back up tomorrow, April 2nd, at 12:00 p.m. to finalize the conference series. Currently, Vanguard sits in second place in the conference standings while the Firestorm dropped down to eighth.
