COSTA MESA, Calif. - In a non-conference tilt of regional foes, the Vanguard Lions (RV) came out on top 5-1 over Cal State San Marcos. Ryan Heinle (JR/Stockton, CA) picks up his third win of the year. Brett Collins put the Lions out in front early with a three run homer in the first inning.
Vanguard (30-12) dropped for runs the first time they came up to bat, all with two outs already punched. The entire batting order went around in the opening frame for the Pride.
Cal State San Marcos scored their lone run of the contest in the top of the third inning. Tyler Place doubled to center field to begin the inning and two batters later he was brought home by L.A. Gamo.
The Lions tacked on a run in the bottom of the same inning for insurance purposes. Brock Eissman (SO/San Clemente, CA) hit a solo shot to right field, his seventh on the year which is tied for a team-high. This would be the final run of the contest scored by either squad.
Lions starter Heinle allowed one run on four hits in six innings on the hill. Shaniel Riviera (JR/Bronx, NY) tossed a perfect seventh inning in relief. Matt Silberman (JR/Murrieta, CA) saw action for the seventh time this season as he threw the eight inning. Michael Ostrea (JR/Buena Park, CA) captured the final three outs for the Blue and Gold.
Kyle Montiel, the starter for the Cougars didn't make it past the first inning before being pulled after giving up four runs against five batters. CSUSM used six other pictures the rest of the way.
Kevin Bettencourt (JR/Modesto, CA) safely reached base all four times he was up to bat: three came on walks and the other on a base hit. Jose Rojas (JR/Anaheim, CA) was 2-3 on the day and Paul Keating (JR/Oceanside, CA) reached base on balls in two of his three times in the batters box. Collins had 3 RBI's on his home run.
Vanguard gets back to GSAC play as they host Westmont College in a weekend series starting on Friday, April 10th at 3:00 p.m. before concluding with the double-header the following day.
