COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard (33-16, 26-13) fell to Bethesda (26-22), 3-2, Tuesday afternoon in a game that saw Flames pitcher Braxton Diaz pitch a complete game against the Lions.
In the low-hitting affair, The Pride outhit the Flames 5-3 but left five runners on the bases in the losing effort. Starter Ryan Heinle (JR/Stockton, CA) (3-1) lasted six innings and allowed three hits and three runs with only one run being earned. The junior righty struck out four batters and walked one.
Senior outfielder Bret Collins (SR/Manhattan Beach, CA) accounted for both Vanguard runs as he hit his fourth home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field in the bottom of the fourth.
With the Lions leading 2-0 going into the top sixth, Heinle walked the first batter. He then committed a balk and allowed an bunt single to load up the bases. An error in right field gave the Flames a run. Bethesda's Parker Franklin followed with a two-run single to give the Flames a 3-2 lead, which proved to be enough as the game remained scoreless in the final innings.
The Lions will have two days off before hosting a three-game series against The Master's College. The first game will be on Friday, April 24, at 3:00 p.m.
