PHOENIX, Ariz. – Vanguard (26-12, 20-10) concluded the weekend series in Phoenix, Ariz. with a sweep over Arizona Christian (8-24, 8-22). Scott Torrey (SR/Simi Valley, CA) earned the win in game one's 6-1 victory as he improved to 4-0 on the year. Jordan Moak (SR/Sulphur, LA) earned the win in game two's 14-4 blowout.
The Lions combined for 33 hits in both games while Arizona Christian only registered 12. Brett Collins led the way for The Pride on 6-of-8 hitting with a solo home run, six RBI, and four runs scored.
Game One: Vanguard 6, Arizona Christian 1
Torrey pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits and one run that came off a solo shot for Arizona Christian. Torrey managed to hold the Firestorm scoreless through the following six innings, fanning a total of five batters.
The Lions scored in all even-numbered innings, starting in the second inning when Jose Rojas (JR/Anaheim, CA) scored on an RBI single by Collins. Collins produced again two innings later with a solo home run to give The Pride the 2-1 advantage.
With a 3-1 lead going into the eighth inning, the Lions were led by Taylor McKnight (SR/Mission Viejo, CA)'s two-run single to cap off a three-run inning to give the Lions the 6-1 win. The Lions outhit the Firestorm, 15-4.
Game Two: Vanguard 14, Arizona Christian 4
Collins, Rojas, and Stone all knocked in three runs apiece in game two's lopsided 14-4 win in game two. Six different Lions had multiple hits as Vanguard posted 18 hits.
Highlighted in Vanguard's offensive performance was the Lions' seven run inning in the fourth. The Lions registered eight hits, including McKnight's two-run home run.
The Lions will continue their road trip when they travel to San Diego to face San Diego Christian College for a midweek three-game series. Game one will be on Wednesday, April 1. First pitch will take place at 3:00 p.m
