COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions kicked off the weekend with a lopsided 10-2 win over William Jessup (5-20, 2-18). (RV) Vanguard grabbed win number 21 to go along with 12 losses (15-10 in GSAC). VU is currently in fourth place in the conference, two games behind third and five games up on the team seeded fifth.
The Lions wasted no time, blowing the game wide open in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Sandoval (SO/Fallbrook, CA) singled to right field and stole second. He was brought home on Brock Eissman (SO/San Clemente, CA)'s single down the right field line. Justin Vega (SO/Chatsworth, CA)s crossed the plate next on an RBI single up the middle by Brett Collins. David Stone (SR/Huntington Beach, CA)'s RBI walk scored Eissman. Michael Flores (SR/Dinuba, CA) was also walked to bring Paul Keating (JR/Oceanside, CA) home. Taylor McKnight (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) sacrifice flied to right field, which allowed Collins to score the fifth run of the inning.
William Jessup closed the game in their second time up to bat. Nainoa Hart hit a 2 RBI double to left center.
Vanguard tacked on another run in the second inning, a sacrifice fly from Eissman which scored Sandoval. In the third inning, Flores singled up the middle to score Justin Davis (SR/Los Angeles, CA) from third base.
Entering the bottom of the fifth frame, the Blue and Gold maintained a 7-2 lead. Keating scored from third on a throwing error after reaching base safely on a bunt.
With two outs already punched in the sixth inning, Vanguard added two more runs on a single by Jose Rojas (JR/Anaheim, CA), scoring Eissman and Vega.
On the hill, Sean Isaac (SO/Redondo Beach, CA) (5-2) earned the win for his four hit and two runs allowed in six innings. He struck out seven batters, while only handing over one base on balls. Three relievers pitched an inning each for the Lions.
Offensively, Eissman stole the show going 3-3 on the day with two RBI's and two runs scored. Keating, Collins, and Vega were all 2-4 in the contest.
The weekend series wraps up with tomorrow's double-header starting at 11:00 a.m. on the field at Vanguard University.
