Lions Run Away with GSAC Opener

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Getting his first taste of Golden State Athletic Conference play, Sean Isaac (SO/Redondo Beach, CA) pitched six strong innings to help Vanguard University defeat Biola University in La Mirada, as the Lions won by a score of 4-1. The Lions took the first game of the three game series behind the arm of the sophomore and through some aggressive base running. With the win Vanguard improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Vanguard got off to a hot start and wasted no time scoring two runs in the first inning off Eagles starting pitcher Jimmy Gallarda (0-1). After a double steal from the Lions base runners, Bret Collins (SR/Manhattan Beach, CA) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, sending Brandon Sandoval (SO/Fallbrook, CA) home for the first run of the inning. Jose Rojas (JR/Anaheim, CA) stepped up next, sending the first pitch he saw out to center field for an RBI double as Justin Vega (SO/Chatsworth, CA) was able to make it home safe from second base.

The Eagles responded in the second inning by way of a Tanner Swire sacrifice fly sending Jeremy Barth home, but Isaac (2-0) took over from there and was able to strike out five Eagles batters in his six innings of work, only giving up three hits and one earned run.

The Lions would add to their lead in the fourth inning when David Stone (SR/Huntington Beach, CA) scored from third on an error after the Eagles catcher threw out Paul Keating (JR/Oceanside, CA) at second base as he attempted the steal. Aggressive base running would be a key to this game, as Vanguard was able to steal seven bases in the contest, keeping Biola on their toes with every base runner. Vanguard was able to add another run in the seventh after solid base running from Sandoval resulted in a run scored, as he was sent home by Collins' second RBI of the contest, this time a single up the middle.

Biola would not go down without a fight though as they staged a ninth inning rally that loaded the bases for Swire. However, the Lions would not be denied the victory as Sam Frakes (SR/Eagle Rock, CA) was able to close the game out and earn the save; giving Isaac his second win of the young season.

Vanguard will look for the sweep as they continue their series against Biola tomorrow with a double header. The games will be played at Eagles Diamond in La Mirada with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00am.
