11-Inning Thriller for #24 VU and #14 TMC

COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 24 Vanguard (25-12, 16-9 GSAC) upset No. 14 The Master's College (29-11, 17-11) 3-2 on Friday in 11 innings of Golden State Athletic Conference baseball. Marshall McKinnon (JR/Los Gatos, CA) earned the win on the mound, while Taylor McKnight (JR/Mission Viejo, CA) came up with the game-winning RBI for the Lions.

Scott Torrey (JR/Simi Valley, CA) got the start and held the Mustangs to two runs in nine innings before McKinnon took over with the contest tied at 2-all.

The Pride's runs came in the second frame off of TMC hurler Andrew Klausmeier.

John Schwer (SR/Burbank, CA) led off the inning with a single to left, and McKnight got his job done with a sacrifice bunt to move Schwer to second. Ian Sakry (SR/Long Beach, CA) came up next and grounded out, but Schwer advanced once again for VU. John Collins (SR/Fallbrook, CA) battled at the plate before taking base on balls, and Greg Younger (SR/Bakersfield, CA) subsequently brought in the first run of the game with a single up the middle of the field. With two outs and an 0-2 count, Nick Rodda (SR/Santa Rosa, CA) managed a base knock to left to score Justin Davis (JR/Los Angeles, CA), who previously entered the game to pinch run for Collins.

The Master's evened the slate in the fifth by way of a two-run dinger from Steve Karkenny.

No runs would score for the next five and a half frames.

In the eleventh, however, the Lions got hungry. Brandon Sandoval (FR/Fallbrook, CA) garnered the inning's lone hit, a lead-off single through the left side. He then stole second and snagged third via a Bret Collins (JR/Manhattan Beach, CA) groundout. Justin Vega (FR/Chatsworth, CA) and Schwer were intentionally walked, and with the bags loaded McKnight grounded out to second to score his freshman teammate and give VU the big GSAC victory.

Torrey and McKinnon notched three and two strikeouts, respectively. McKinnon moves to 3- 1 with the win. He did not surrender a hit in his two frames of work.

Sandoval, who went 2-for-5 at the plate, was the lone Lion to record multiple hits against the Mustangs.

Thomas Mobley (SR/Anaheim, CA)'s double in the ninth was VU's only extra base hit on the day.

TMC left 10 stranded on base in the affair, compared to The Pride, which brought all but five base-runners in. The Mustangs held a slight 8-7 edge in hits on the day.

The GSAC series will resume on Saturday at noon.
