ORANGE, Calif. – No. 24 Vanguard used eight pitchers and 11 hits to take down Chapman University on Tuesday evening at Hart Park. Cam Harold (JR/Hamilton, Ontario) recorded the win on the mound, while Marshall McKinnon (JR/Los Gatos, CA) notched a save in the tight 4-3 contest.
Nick Rodda (SR/Santa Rosa, CA), Thomas Mobley (SR/Anaheim, CA) and Ian Sakry (SR/Long Beach, CA) tallied two knocks apiece in the non-conference showdown for the Blue and Gold.
Rodda, Mobley and classmate John Schwer (SR/Burbank, CA) managed extra-base hits for the Lions.
Mobley, who hit a two-run jack in the affair, posted a game-best 2 RBIs with his two-for-five performance. His homerun came in the first inning with two outs on the board after Bret Collins (JR/Manhattan Beach, CA) reached base via balls.
Chapman took the lead in the second frame, where it garnered all three of its runs on four hits.
The Panthers would not be out front for long, however, as The Pride put together two additional runs in the third frame.
Brandon Sandoval (FR/Fallbrook, CA) drew a walk to lead off the inning, which B. Collins followed with a single through the left side. Schwer then recorded a double to score Sandoval and push Collins to third, and McKnight grounded out to bring Collins home before the frame came to a close.
No more runs would cross home for either team in the final six innings.
In fact, after the third, VU pitchers allowed just a single knock. Sam Frakes (JR/Eagle Rock, CA), Christian Sheehan (FR/Redondo Beach, CA), Roberto Johnson (FR/San Marcos, CA), Johnny Fageaux (JR/Rossmoor, CA), and starter Jordan Moak (JR/Sulphur, LA) did not surrender hits in their respective one-inning stints on the hill.
Two of Moak's outs in the first frame were strikeouts.
Vanguard's three stolen bases on the night belonged to Rodda, Sakry and Taylor McKnight (JR/Mission Viejo, CA).
The Lions will host No. 14 The Master's College on Friday and Saturday for a three game Golden State Athletic Conference series.
