EL CAJON, Calif. – No. 14 Vanguard out-hit No. 6 San Diego Christian 11-8 on Friday at Grossmont College, but fell 7-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference match-up. Right Fielder John Schwer (SR/Burbank, CA) compiled three of the Lions' knocks and an RBI in the affair.
The Pride committed three errors on the day, two of which came in the fifth inning, where the Hawks scored three runs off of one hit.
Vanguard put three of its own runs up in the sixth. Brandon Sandoval (FR/Fallbrook, CA) led off for the Lions and took base by way of mishap on SDCC's hurler. Bret Collins (JR/Manhattan Beach, CA) tripled down the right field line next to score his freshman teammate and Thomas Mobley (SR/Anaheim, CA) followed the three-bagger with an RBI double of his own. A balk sent Mobley to third, and Schwer brought him home with a base knock to right to cut the margin to four runs at 7-3.
The Pride's final score of the day came in the top of the ninth as pinch-hitter Michael Flores (JR/Dinuba, CA) went on a solo mission and cranked a ball over the right field fence on a 2-1 count.
Scott Torrey (JR/Simi Valley, CA) started the contest and pitched five frames for the Blue and Gold. He walked three and struck out five in the effort. Torrey moves to 7-2 with the loss.
Roberto Johnson (FR/San Marcos, CA) took over on the mound in the seventh and closed the competition strong, holding SDCC scoreless and K'ing two in the outing.
Shortstop Nick Rodda (SR/Santa Rosa, CA) and Mobley went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double apiece in the loss. Rodda added a stolen base to his line, while Mobley notched a run scored.
The series between the Hawks and Lions resumes on Saturday at noon. The doubleheader will be played at SDCC's old field, located at 2100 Greenfield Drive, El Cajon, CA 92019.
