COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 14 Vanguard dropped a 9-inning non-conference game to Cal State San Marcos 7-3 on Wednesday at the VU Baseball Field. Catcher John Collins (SR/Fallbrook, CA) had an excellent outing for the Lions, going 3-for-4 at the plate in the loss.
The Pride's other Collins, designated hitter Bret Collins (JR/Manhattan Beach, CA), also had success offensively, with his 2-for-4 performance on the day.
Defensively, the Lions struggled, recording four errors in the affair.
CSUSM jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and held an advantage throughout.
Starter Richard Perry (SR/Fontana, CA) took the loss though only two of the five runs that scored while he was on the mound were earned.
Sam Frakes (JR/Eagle Rock, CA) pitched three innings for the Blue and Gold. He held the Cougars scoreless during the stint, giving up a single hit and recording VU's lone strikeout.
Seniors John Schwer (SR/Burbank, CA) and Ian Sakry (SR/Long Beach, CA) tallied an RBI apiece for Vanguard.
San Marcos owned a slight 12-10 edge in hits in the contest, but five of the knocks were for extra bases.
The Pride looks to rebound on Friday against No. 6 San Diego Christian on the road. The first competition of the three-game series is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
