COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard pitchers Scott Torrey (JR, Simi Valley, CA) and Johnny Fageaux (JR, Rossmoor, CA) notched a win and a save, respectively, as the Lions held on to defeat Biola 7-6 on Monday in Golden State Athletic Conference baseball action.
Thomas Mobley (SR, Anaheim, CA) extended his hot streak at the plate with a team-leading three hits in the affair. He went 3-for-5, scoring three runs and posting an RBI on the day. Two of his knocks against the Eagles were doubles, and he also stole a base in the contest.
Torrey, the Blue and Gold's starter, tossed five innings and allowed a single run off of three hits. Vanguard was leading 5-1 when he made his exit.
From there, the game took a turn, as Biola rallied to register four runs in the next three innings.
Luckily, the Lions also managed a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to hold a 7-5 edge heading into the final frame.
The Eagles cut the margin to one in the top of the ninth, but Fageaux subbed into the game to garner the last out of the day.
Torrey improves to 5-1 with the win. The Pride's 2014 record stands at 15-9 (10-8 GSAC).
Biola committed four errors in the contest.
John Schwer (SR, Burbank, CA), Greg Younger (SR, Bakersfield, CA) and Jack Daru (SR, Bradenton, FL), all seniors like Mobley, stepped up to combine for six of the Lions' 12 hits. Each player recorded two hits and an RBI in the victory.
