SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Vanguard split Saturday's Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Westmont, besting the Warriors in the nightcap 5-3 after dropping the opener 6-2. Senior Nick Rodda (Santa Rosa, Calif.) went 3-for-7 on the day with two RBIs and a run scored for the Blue and Gold.
Scott Torrey (Simi Valley, Calif.) garnered The Pride's game two win and improves to 3-0 in his junior campaign.
In the nightcap, Vanguard scored four of its five runs in the first inning. Four Lions registered knocks in the frame and two of VU's three RBIs were credited to junior designated hitter Bret Collins (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), who roped a double to score senior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) and freshman Brandon Sandoval (Fallbrook, Calif.).
Senior John Schwer (Burbank, Calif.) posted Vanguard's final run in the sixth after leading off the frame with a single up the middle. Greg Younger (Bakerfield, Calif.) brought his classmate home with a sacrifice fly after another pair of upperclassmen, Ian Sakry (Long Beach, Calif.) and John Collins (Fallbrook, Calif.), drew a walk and flew out to move Schwer to third.
Fourth-year Richard Perry (Fontana, Calif.) suffered the game one loss after allowing eight hits and four runs in four innings on the mound. He struck out three in the effort. With the defeat, Perry moves to .500 (1-1) on the season.
Rodda tallied both of the Lions RBI's in the opener by way of a fifth-inning double.
Vanguard sits at 9-2 overall and 4-2 in GSAC after going 1-2 in its series with the Warriors. Westmont is 5-6 on the season and 3-6 in league games.
The Lions will host Bethesda on Tuesday, February 11th for a 9-inning game. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
