SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Vanguard baseball suffered its first loss of the season Friday afternoon on the road against its Golden State Athletic Conference foe, Westmont (4-5, 2-5 GSAC). With the 12–2 defeat Vanguard moves to 8-1 (3-1 GSAC) on the year. The series will resume on Saturday beginning at 11:00 am.
Newcomer Eddie Rivera (Anaheim, Calif.) started the contest for Vanguard and took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs in four and a third innings of work. Rivera sits at 1-1 in his senior campaign.
Junior Taylor McKnight (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and senior Nick Rodda (Santa Rosa, Calif.) paced The Pride with a combined five hits in the game. Rodda went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, while McKnight went 2-for-3 on the day. Freshman Brandon Sandoval (Fallbrook, Calif.) tallied the Lions' remaining RBI with a single to left field in the fifth.
Third year pitcher Jordan Moak (Sulphur, La.) tossed the seventh and eighth innings and struck out four Warriors' batters. He was the only VU hurler to not allow a run in the competition.
Westmont's Torin Shaikh garnered the win on the mound and improves to 2-1 on the season. The Warriors were led offensively by William Barring who managed a 4-for-5 performance in the GSAC match-up.
