SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Senior designated hitter Bret Collins (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) compiled four hits on the day, going 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener and 2-for-3 with an RBI in the nightcap to keep his team-leading batting average above .400 following Saturday's doubleheader against No. 12 The Master's College.
The Mustangs swept the three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series to improve to 15-2 overall and 9-2 in conference play.
Vanguard moves to 9-6 on the year (4-5 GSAC).
The opener was tight, with Vanguard leading 1-0 in the first and battling back in the seventh to tie the contest at 3-all after going down 3-1 in the sixth, but two late runs by the Mustangs gave TMC the 5-3 victory.
In the nightcap, The Master's used a six-run fifth to pull away from The Pride. Vanguard cut the margin from eight to six in the sixth frame using a knock apiece from senior Greg Younger (Bakersfield, Calif.), freshman Brandon Sandoval (Fallbrook, Calif.), B. Collins and senior John Schwer (Burbank, Calif.), but in the end the deficit proved too challenging to overcome against a talented TMC squad.
Schwer finished the day at 3-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI. Schwer, the Lions' leader in extra base hits (tied with junior Taylor McKnight), notched his fifth double of the season in game two.
Vanguard returns home for an exhibition contest on Monday, February 17th against Japan Railway Corp Team. The single nine-inning game is scheduled for noon.
